ritmo latino

I enjoy salsa. I think I’ll download some of that. When it comes to traditional Mexican music, the kind influenced by the Germans (ballads and rancheras), I like music that transports me to el campo. It needs to be the kind of music that makes me feel like I’m in one of the ciudades fronterizas de Cormac McCarthy or one of the rural villages of Juan Rulfo. I want to smell the dust and the ungulates and the tortillas. I want to taste the tequila. Some of the best traditional Mexican music conjures an amazing sense of place and culture; some of it annoys the hell out of me. I’ll have to figure out what separates the two . . .
